While there are many taxis available in Dalian
(except when the weather is bad..…). Many taxis will only operate in certain areas of the city making it extremely difficult to get across town. The cars are often small and dirty, drivers speak no English and tend to have erratic driving styles, with little regard for personal safety. In most cases, you will need to have a translator with you or ensure that you have the destination written in Chinese characters before leaving the hotel. This creates a lot of anxiety as you have no idea where you are going, what is the most direct route, or indeed if you will even get there!
The alternative of choosing a car rental company in China is also usually impractical. Firstly, in China, Foreigners can not drive without a Chinese driver's license, so you must have a Chinese driver accompany you. While some rental car companies can provide you with a driver, all the liability for accident damage, injury, theft and speeding tickets is your personal responsibility!!
